Autopen controversy aside (which is more about Dylan, overall, being kind of a jerk), this is a fascinating read. A scholarly book of music theory this is not, nor is it particularly philosophical. It's Bob ranting about his favorite songs of all time. Barely any of them crack the midcentury mark, but the whole thing is compelling nonetheless.Autopen controversy aside (which is more about Dylan, overall, being kind of a jerk), this is a fascinating read. Oh boy, I fancy myself a high-falootin' librarian and all, but this one almost killed me. I made it through, but I'm definitely going to have to have another crack at it in 10 years (preferably with the annotated Cambridge Centenary Edition).

It's such a joy to read a book about intergalactic travel where everyone is...nice. It's the first Sci Fi "gentle read" I've ever read, and it's the book I have been recommending to everyone since I finished it.

One of the first parenting books I've read at the insistence of my spouse, and wow did it give me a lot of great advice about dealing with my 8-year-old who, just this morning, had a meltdown because she didn't want to wear her coat despite it being 10 degrees outside. This is a quick read--written by one of America's great fiction writers--and it’s hard to really say anything bad about it, other than you’re gonna look real weird going up to people like, “BOGS ARE SO INTERESTING YOU GOTTA READ THIS BOOK!” The real ones will listen. This is a quick read--written by one of America's great fiction writers--and it’s hard to really say anything bad about it, other than you’re gonna look real weird going up to people like, “BOGS ARE SO INTERESTING YOU GOTTA READ THIS BOOK!” The real…

Mercifully, Ocker isn't one of those "I KNOW WHAT I SAW!" tinfoil hat guys and understands that cryptids are supposed to be fun and bring us together as a species. My favorite WEIRD cryptid I'd never heard of until reading this book was the Fresno Nightcrawler (which looks like a pair of sentient pants).Mercifully, Ocker isn't one of those "I KNOW WHAT I SAW!" tinfoil hat guys and understands that cryptids are supposed to be fun and bring us together as a species. Jennifer Egan's follow up to her award-winning A Visit From the Goon Squad revisits that novel's cast of characters in a near future where nascent technology feels like more than humanity is capable of handling. Despite having an overarching vibe about the ways tech infects our lives, at its core Egan is telling stories about flawed and deeply human characters and that's what makes this one stick. I thought Goon Squad was fine, but I loved The Candy House.Jennifer Egan's follow up to her award-winning A Visit From the Goon Squad revisits that novel's cast of characters in a near future where nascent technology feels like more than humanity is capable of handling. For anyone who was a huge fan of The Martian but a little let down by Andy Weir's foray into the mystery/thriller genre with Artemis, Project Hail Mary feels like he's getting back to basics. It's the Martian on steroids as Weir chronicles humanity's last hope in the guise of a high school science teacher being flung across the galaxy to stem the Earth's extinction at the hands of a microscopic alien race. Where The Martian took a purely scientific approach to its plot, Project Hail Mary takes a...well, I don't want to spoil it. It's weird to want to spend more time in Panem, and yet I'm here for whatever prequels and sequels Suzanne Collins wants to throw at me. This one is The Portrait of a Dictator as a Young Sociopath as we watch a young President Snow find himself (and it turns out that self is, you guessed it, bloody awful). It's weird to want to spend more time in Panem, and yet I'm here for whatever prequels and sequels Suzanne Collins wants to throw at me. Box Brown delivers another excellent historical graphic novel, this time focusing on WHY cannabis is so demonized in America. The answer is, you guessed it, a whole lot of racism and bad faith government officials.
