A powerful look into the authors quest to discover more about black women who fought their enslavement. Hall, who was a lawyer and saw how black people, particularly women, were treated in the legal system, turned her attention to getting a PHD in history, and studied women and gender in America to try to get at the root of the issue. Through endless hours and years of combing through archives in America and England, and while getting stopped at every turn, her painstaking research pays off as she finds enslaved women leading revolts for their freedom. Although I am not a graphic novel reader, I think this story lends itself well to the format.A powerful look into the authors quest to discover more about black women who fought their enslavement. This second book by the sister duo is perhaps even more stunning than the first. The pair share racist stories from family members, their parents included, so you can imagine the things they endured when younger. Told with humor, you laugh out loud and at the same time shake your head in dismay and often drop your jaw in horror. The audiobook is the way to go, nothing beats hearing the sisters tell the stories and laugh through the outrageousness of it all. This second book by the sister duo is perhaps even more stunning than the first. A delightfully dark humored western, enjoyable even for those who don't like westerns. The Sisters Brothers are the perfect antiheros, as different as two brothers can be, on a mission to track down and take care of the elusive Hermann Warm. Told from the perspective of Eli, a good natured assassin who would just like to settle down with a nice woman, any woman will do. This western is surprisingly quirky, funny and even moving. Fantastic narration and compelling writing make this a great listen.A delightfully dark humored western, enjoyable even for those who don't like westerns. A mystery for those who don't like mysteries. The charming main characters, Cormoran and Robin, are the draw. To me, the mystery is good but it's just a vehicle to get to know these characters. I've since enjoyed the whole series despite my typical aversion to series and mysteries. The books are long but I savor living in their world for a while. Narration can make or break a book, I'm not sure, but perhaps Robert Glenister voice is the real star here.A mystery for those who don't like mysteries. Globetrotting, car fixing, tractor driving, anonymous book writing Rhett, comes home to save the family farm, only to entangle herself in a little deceit to avoid her overly critical mother. I loved the strong female characters and the empowering friendship as well as the complicated mother/daughter relationship and sense of community. There was also a dash of romance in this easy listen. I am not a romance fan although I keep trying; I find them too formulaic and predictable. The Unhoneymooners was a typical romcom, however, I found the writing funny and engaging enough to enjoy. An easy, quick and fun listen.

This inspiring short film won the 2020 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. In a quick 40 minutes, this movie shows the power of changing the lives of impoverished girls in Kabul. Skateistan, is a nonprofit organization which finds children and gives them an education as well as learning to skateboard, which, in this culture, is only acceptable for males. Skateistan offers these girls a way to face to their fears and dream of a future. The children are inspiring and heartwarming. Hats off to the teachers who put themselves at risk to educate children. When a doting husband to a wife with severe head trauma meets a random woman in a coffee shop and hires her, on the spot, to take care of her, what could possibly go wrong?! Although there were a lot of things I did not like about this book, the biggest was that there are no surprises, it's textbook predictable, there was still something redeeming about it that I can't put my finger on. If you haven't read Verity (it has a nearly identical plot) you might enjoy this. When a doting husband to a wife with severe head trauma meets a random woman in a coffee shop and hires her, on the spot, to take care of her, what could possibly go wrong?! When Jess plans a visit to her brothers and he is nowhere to be found, what unfolds is mystery upon mystery. The story starts off slow with a cast of dubious characters and different POVs to keep track of, but I found them easy to remember. The second half of the book really ramps up and twists abound. No, not much is believable which will turn a lot of people off, but for me, the story and writing style were compelling enough for me to enjoy the rideWhen Jess plans a visit to her brothers and he is nowhere to be found, what unfolds is mystery upon mystery. This dystopian novel about child welfare and government overreach was unique to be sure. I appreciated that how Frida ended up in the school was not sugar coated. Frida's life is spiraling out of control and she makes a very terrible decision that sends her to the School for Good Mothers in hopes of getting her daughter back. The premise is fascinating and the commentary on social issues is thought provoking. I found this rather slow and repetitive at times, I waited for something more to happen. Overall, the novel was unique enough for me to recommend to those interested in something a little heavy that makes you think. This dystopian novel about child welfare and government overreach was unique to be sure. This book offers ideas and ways to find connection with others, particularly in the age of Zoom and social media. There were some solid ideas here, and I feel the author really tried to take different types of personalities into account, however a lot of this seemed more appropriate for not only a younger person, but also a very outgoing person, the authors name is Smiley after all.
