Teachers--What an incredible, suspenseful book that is perfect for an October read-aloud! Mary Downing Hahn is a master at creating tension in the plot while making the characters very real. When I read this book aloud to my fourth graders, I would use the more suspenseful parts in the book to stop the reading for the day, much to the groans of the students!
This was incredibly predictable, I picked it up because I recognised the cover art from grade school. I don't think it actually deserved the grade school hype. But it's a bit better for younger kids. Though it's weird just how abusive and bipolar the parents are. There's subtext in the parents dialogue and actions which are... disturbing. Not terrible, but not written with a lot of effort or skill.
It's great for be-tweeners - just enough ghostly curiosity and suspense to keep them reading!
On its own, this book is a solid middle-grade ghostly mystery. If you've read other MDH books, however, it suffers from being too similar to "Wait Til Helen Comes" (which is my favorite of Hahn's books), with painter mothers and a body of water (lake/pond, respectively) playing a prominent role in the plot.
This was soooo good if you like mystery! This is more like for ages 10 and up.
This book was very good. I liked the plot. The characters were very interesting, too. I recommend this book to everyone who loves ghost stories, or people who are just looking for a good book. I liked how the author got to the point right away and how she created a creepy mood.
This is the best book by this author i have read so far! I recommend it to everyone who loves a great book! lots of action and adventure; i couldnt put it down!
It is a wonderfully writen book that captivated me in its adventurous and amazing story. Everything felt so real and genuine: the setting, characters and the whole plot.
This book is AMAZING! I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes an interesting ghost story with a mystery. It is very interesting and it only took me 2 days to read. Even if you don't like ghost story's the minute you pick it up you wont be able to put it down.
A combination mystery and horror story. A little creepy, but not all that bad.
I've read it about 9 times now! It's just so good! They NEED to make a movie about it(:
Very addicting. I couldn't stop reading it once I picked it up! I tried my best not to read it in the night . . . but, ah, guess it's my fault that I got a nightmare about a ghost from the beach visiting me . . .
This is a awesome book and i think that people that like suspense and ghosts will like this book very much.
I like these book because it is about horror and suspense.I like it because it totally grabs my attention!Sissy is really mean, spiteful, but, you will never guess what happened one day with Ali's mother and Ali's aunt! Sissy is bossy but, she has to get close to her aunt, and Ali's mother! Awesome book!:)
This book was really creepy. I liked it a lot though, because I like ghost stories. All the ghost stories by Mary Downing Hahn are very good. Anyone who liked this one should read the rest of her stories.
