I read the rave reviews and thought I must be missing something, Then I read a few reviews that were the way I felt about this movie. Boring and silly, asking young women who are not mature enough to have sensible lives themselves to help…

Watched this for Library Film Club. Utterly fantastic movie. Takes place between 1970 and 1980, rise of punk rock, death of free love and Jimmy Carter liberalism. Great acting by Annette Benning, Greta Gerwig, and Elle Fanning. And Billy…

A great little movie about a single mother and her son. She enlists several people to help 'raise' her son - giving him access to other adults in his life to round out his coming of age. At times this movie is funny, poignant,…

The cinematic equivalent of receiving a warm hug. A funny, heartwarming coming of age story full of such sincerity and amazing performances.

An excellent coming of age story about finding yourself, experiencing life, where you want to be and I'm not talking about just the teenage years I'm also talking about the adult years as well because even though we are grown up we might…

I liked it because she thought it was a good idea to ask people who had little control over their own lives (and who weren't stable people) to help her raise her child. It reminded me of 1960's burnouts who never could or did grow up.

I like the term "rudderless"... the movie was, but isn't life for a teenage boy? I had a happy two parent childhood, but if I had been raised by a single woman, the thought of her quirky friends trying to give me advice might have been…

Annette Bening is amazing, but that's it

Good cast, but I kept wondering why am I staying with this...maybe it will come together for me. It didn't. I didn't recognize anything I know anything about, despite living some similarities. AB was so herself.....

I am almost exactly the same age as the screenwriter-director Mike Mills, & thus almost exactly the same age as the kid protagonist in this film. I was really hoping for something that captured a little of the ineffable nature of being…

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Although i would not recommend it to most people, as there are no superheros and thinking may be required. The film is not predictable, and has many thoughtful things to say about how children are…

Wow, what a lame waste of time. This movie had no central theme. It was not engaging. It was lame. It just rambled along from one scene to the next without purpose or point, Don’t waste your time.

Meh. I watched this hoping after the first hour it would somehow make "sense" and maybe in some ways it did but in many others it did not. It never really went anywhere. It was like they had an idea on paper but the writers/studio/actors…

This drama/comedy film is actually much better than I was expecting, and manages to tell the stories of multiple different types of women in the 20th century. Set in 1979 California, Dorothea is a middle-aged mother trying to raise her son…

It was a progressive version of it takes a village to raise a teen boy in mellow Santa Barbara. Witty script and admirable acting jobs, particularly Bening (60 yr. old in real life) who played the 55 year old mother without any makeup…

I almost gave up on this movie after the first, gruelling for me, 20 minutes. I went back to it a day later, and persevered. I'm still not sure it was worth almost an hour and a half of my life (I skipped bits and pieces everywhere. It is,…

The characters in this movie were fully developed, with flaws and all, yet there was sympathy in to how they lived. It wasn't necessarily aimless, they might not be certain what they wanted out of life. Watching Mike Mills in the extras…

Agree with films reviewers who described this film (and the characters' lives) as aimless and messy.

Trailer didn't entice me, film lived up to the trailer. Couldn't get into it.

I can attest to the other comments, this movie is slow moving; and Bening's performance is good. Women over the age of 45 years may find some limited value in reminiscing about the social context they grew up in; but if this doesn't…

Boring, slow, and more than a bit pretentious. Benning’s acting is fine but even she cannot save this snore fest.

I loved this film. The characters are flawed and fragile, but each one is still capable of insight and courage. Bening is a marvel. So much is demanded of her character, and she pulls it off with grace and humour. Some commentors here have…

Interesting characters and depiction of that time. Annette Bening was good. The beginning half was sad but it got lighter in the second half.
