The Wonderful World of Animals series focuses on the common characteristics of the major animal families. Its goal is to give children a broader understanding of similarities between animals that seem very different from each other at first glance, such as horses and cats. Basic concepts in biology and physiology are presented to help children recognize similar traits and features of animals of the same family. This excellent series is a complement to the more typical wildlife series whose volumes focus on single animals.
Invertebrates constitute over 90 percent of all animal species. They differ from vertebrates (mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians) because they lack backbones. This physical characteristic is the only thing that all members of the huge and varied group of invertebrates have in common.
