What is there to say ..... besides ...... one of the best movies of all time.

This movie is the only remake that I have enjoyed more than the original. If you want to see the original movie, it is called Love Affair and stars Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer.

A classic tear-jerker of a love story in which two people--though both engaged to others--fall in love on an ocean-crossing and face a number of hurdles (some obvious, and some unexpected) in their efforts to be together. I am not personally a fan of romances that involve affairs, so I was not on-board (no pun intended) with the two main-characters' romance at first, but they did stay true to one another after falling in love, so I was more sold on their relationship as the story progressed. I did love the absolutely gorgeous scene at the grandmother's house, and I also loved Deborah Kerr's beautiful wardrobe--I wonder why that type of clothing went out of style... :)

I do not understand why this movie is considered a "classic love story." I love both Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant, and normally I love classic films. But this one I cannot stand. I don't like love stories where the main characters start out with other people. And I don't like movies where the characters behave like total idiots for no reason, and Deborah Kerr's character is truly stupid near the end of the movie. Her motivations do not make sense to me. I don't recommend this movie at all.

VERY GOOD 1957 love story with great acting by handsome Cary Grant and fab beautiful Scots redhead Deborah Kerr in this classic romantic film.
I did particularly enjoy the visit to Grandma's. Seems I've seen that villa and the view to the sea in several movies.

With its lush widescreen cinematography, rich technicolor sets and bubbling dialogue, Leo McCarey’s film certainly starts out with a romantic flair. Grant and Kerr’s sparkling repartee, moving from capricious banter to lovestruck confessions, is very well written and delivered with appropriate vigour; a side trip to visit an aging grandmother in her hilltop villa is especially poignant. However, if Affair begins like a refreshing sip of pink champagne, it ends with a mouthful of sticky corn syrup. Schmaltzy pathos competes with dewy-eyed pining to see how many tissues they can wring out of the audience while the addition of a cloying children’s choir of sweetly smiling cherubs (why does their junior band sound like a professional orchestra?) goes straight for the sentimental jugular. But, for those who can handle the extra helping of icing towards the end, this is one cinematic confection that will leave you satisfied.

:The casting of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr was a fantastic idea of director Leo McCarey. Not only did he direct the film but he wrote the screenplay with Delmar Daves. Cary Grant plays a playboy named Nick Ferrante. He is already engaged to marry, but when he sees Deborah Kerr as Terry McKay, she changes his mind. Two actors could not look any more in love than Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. They look in love, act in love, and build a relationship we the viewer roots for. See if you don't find them irresistible yourselves. I think your in for one of the best love stories on film!

A truly endearing classic from McCarey with Grant and Kerr at their best.

One of my favourites. Great dialogue and beautiful settings. Two beautiful actors together. Only for the true romantic.
