As a former Soldier who served on the East West Borders of Germany I enjoyed this series. This series is perfect as it is done in the time period it was meant to be so everything is authentic for its time. The acting of the characters is superb. I watch this once a year! Hollywood of today is mostly dead......

Definitely read the book first. Alec Guinness is fantastic. Be sure to read then see the first book, Tinker Taylor.... All well worth the effort.

Le Carre said that he couldn't write Smiley anymore after this PBS series, because Alec Guiness stole the character from him. Every actor matches the character in the novels, the plot and most of the dialogue is the same; even the ambience of the beautifully composed black and white cinematography is spot on. These two miniseries are some of the best novel adaptions ever.

Your best bet it to rent the mini-series Tinker Tailor Solder Spy before viewing this, things will be far more clear and understandable. You'll be glad you did.
