This book, having been an entry in the YRCA, was my introduction to Andrew Clement's mysterious writing, which in my opinion is better than his most well known book, Frindle. The book had you guessing what was going to happen. Will it be this, will it be that? This IS a young readers book and as such the writing is quite simplified, but I enjoy it still even though I know it is way below my level. Also see The Janitor's Boy, which is similar.

Andrew Clements seems to be able to describe the thought processes of grade school aged kids better than almost anyone. In this book, Ted, the only 6th grader in a slowly dying one-room school, wants to live up to the Boy Scout ideals of honor, truthfulness, and helping others. (He learned about these in his few months as a scout although there isn't a troop in his town anymore.) Ted also likes detective novels. He sees a girl's face in the window of an abandoned farmhouse and starts investigating. Very shortly, he learns what he can do to help and what he can't do, and who he can trust in his small, prairie town.
