"Can You Hear the Nightbird Call?" is a gripping, beautiful novel that tells the stories of three families and shows the effect of the past on new immigrants and how personal and political tragedies are connected. The novel sweeps from the Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, to the assault on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and the explosion of the Air India plane over Ireland in 1985.

Having read two of her books, and enjoying her writing style, I wanted to read more of her books.
But the ending and the violence at the end of it put me off. It is a fact that humans are cruel and can stoop down to the lowest of depravity when they are on the attack, protecting their religion or clan. Yet, it comes close to the massacre of innocents by the Nazis during WW2.
I had to get down to read a book which was far from human suffering and violence to get rid of the bad feeling.

I enjoy reading Badami's books, this being the second in a month. Her characters in this novel straddle 2 worlds culminating in the Air India airplane crash over Ireland. Her novel shows how easily friends turn into enemies when politics and religion are combined. Her characters are simple, ordinary people for whom family means a great deal.
