Recently widowed and well-to-do Laura Henderson needs a diversion to see her through war torn London. On a whim she buys the derelict Windmill theatre in the West End and persuades impresario Vivian Van Damm to run it. The two don't seem to get along at all. Although their idea of a non-stop revue is at first a success, other theatres begin to copy the idea and disaster looms. Laura suggests they put nudes in the show, but Van Damm points out that the Lord Chamberlain, who licenses live shows in Britain, is likely to have something to say about this. Luckily for Laura, she is friends with him.

Possibly the most plot-free film I've ever seen. A wealthy widow buys a theatre and starts a revue there to cope with the boredom of being alone. The show does well for a while, until other theatres copy her formula. Then, because they are losing money, she decides to add nude women - who don't sing or dance, they just stand there to be gawped at behind the real, singing and dancing talents. And that is kind of it. Towards the end, the war starts.

There are good parts for Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins. Hoskins co-produced the film and bravely does a full-frontal nude shot, which is only fair as many of the female actors had to disrobe for the revue scenes. While the nudity is tasteful, I can't help but notice that the female actors are being used in pretty much the same way the girls in the revue were. Adding naked breasts to an entertainment that, frankly, hardly anyone would bother to see if not for the nudity.

I've just started watching the director's commentary with Stephen Frears and although I am only minutes in, he is already more entertaining than the whole of this film was!

Didn't get very far into this one. Too much nudity for me.

I did not know this was a true story until the end. It depicts London during WWII. Its probably a good date movie.

If you like Judi Dench you must see this film. I've borrowed it several times and have watched it countless times. I love its portrayal of the widow. The actors are excellent, the music singable. The time of the London Blitz is well handled. I love the music! I love that it's a true story, or at least based on facts. I love the interviews at the end of the movie with the women who were young in 1940 and who were actual actors and singers in the Review. It's a film with no downsides, in my opinion.

This is a remarkable movie. Of course with its two main stars, Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins, it would be difficult to go wrong. It also features the lovely Kelly Reilly who has a style all of her own!

I suppose that it is not exactly in the genre of "film," but as a movie, it is terrific entertainment of a true story set in London in 1941 during the Blitz. That can keep you on the edge of one's seat, for sure!
