Wow, this movie is even better than I remembered. The artistry is amazing, from the acting to the dancing to the music to the choreography. The plot is exciting, too, with an ending that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

VERY GOOD 1985 film with terrific dancing by both Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. Also excellent setting and cinematography in St. Petersburg, Leningrad and Siberia. Seeing all that architecture reminiscent of the Russian empire was quite interesting.
The background plot of defection/emigration is a little weak, but I did like the Baryshnikov character saying 'I am still Russian, but I am just not Soviet' emphasizing the difference between a long term historical culture and a current political regime.

The romantic pairings were also a bit weak (for me) but the film's fab dancing sequences carry the day and I am pleased to have seen them (especially that beginning Baryshnikov number).

It is STUNNING to see these two great dancers together. The plot is not that exciting, but seeing them side by side is unparalleled.

the review by Sabalah is excellent and I think that even a professional reviewer would have difficulty writing a better one.

I first saw the movie at a theater when it was released and have seen if many times since. I hope that eventually it is re-released to the big screen.

I learned a good deal about the history of these defectors from this period of time. I knew some but this was a delightful way to get some see some beautiful dancing.

I really enjoyed this movie. The description is miss leading. The plane Mikhail is traveling on makes a forced landing in Russian where he defected from. He is then forced to dance in Russia. And the drama unfolds from there.

This movie is breath taking, thought provoking....it leaves quite an impression on you. You see it and feel it's effects long after you've finished viewing it. Barysnikov's dances are mesmerizing, and as you watch you know you are viewing one of the best dancers to have ever lived. Gregory Hines is a true performer in every sense of the word- dancer, actor and singer. Rossellini's acting was so innate she seemed to truly BE her character- through facial expression and movement, etc.; a natural. The storyline was complex and rewarding and took on head-first many pertinent social issues we take for granted like free will and freedom of expression; not to mention communism, politics, and racism. Borrow this film....you will not be disappointed. It is an experience, not just a movie.
