Leonard Cohen's 8th album, from 1988, is probably his last great album and the one the connected him with a new, younger audience. Most of the first songs of his I heard were from this, albeit cover versions (R.E.M.'s "First We Take Manhattan," Concrete Blonde's "Everybody Knows"). At least half of these songs are stone cold Cohen classics: "Tower of Song," "Everybody Knows," "First We Take Manhattan" and the title track. The very 80s production (Miami Vice synths, soft jazz sax, pillowy drums) is a little dated, but provides a nice contrast with his worn voice and dark, apocalyptic lyrics. Too bad about that "Jazz Police" though.
