Just before summer begins, 13-year-old Ali finds an odd photograph in the attic. She knows the two children in it are her mother, Claire, and her aunt Dulcie. But who's the third person, the one who's been torn out of the picture?

Ali figures she'll find out while she's vacationing in Maine with Dulcie and her four-year-old daughter, Emma, in the house where Ali's mother's family used to spend summers. All hopes for relaxation are quashed shortly after their arrival, though, when the girls meet Sissy, a kid who's mean and spiteful and a bad influence on Emma.

Strangest of all, Sissy keeps talking about a girl named Teresa who drowned under mysterious circumstances back when Claire and Dulcie were kids, and whose body was never found. At first Ali thinks Sissy's just trying to scare her with a ghost story, but soon she discovers the real reason why Sissy is so angry. . . . Mary Downing Hahn is at her chilling best in this new supernatural tale that's certain to send shivers down her readers' spines.

Teachers--What an incredible, suspenseful book that is perfect for an October read-aloud! Mary Downing Hahn is a master at creating tension in the plot while making the characters very real. When I read this book aloud to my fourth graders, I would use the more suspenseful parts in the book to stop the reading for the day, much to the groans of the students!

This was incredibly predictable, I picked it up because I recognised the cover art from grade school. I don't think it actually deserved the grade school hype. But it's a bit better for younger kids. Though it's weird just how abusive and bipolar the parents are. There's subtext in the parents dialogue and actions which are... disturbing. Not terrible, but not written with a lot of effort or skill.

It's great for be-tweeners - just enough ghostly curiosity and suspense to keep them reading!

On its own, this book is a solid middle-grade ghostly mystery. If you've read other MDH books, however, it suffers from being too similar to "Wait Til Helen Comes" (which is my favorite of Hahn's books), with painter mothers and a body of water (lake/pond, respectively) playing a prominent role in the plot.

This book was very good. I liked the plot. The characters were very interesting, too. I recommend this book to everyone who loves ghost stories, or people who are just looking for a good book. I liked how the author got to the point right away and how she created a creepy mood.
