VERY GOOD 2007 music CD with 15 tribute cuts to Ella performed by a variety of contemporary pop, jazz, blues and RnB artists.
I rather enjoyed their performances of familiar Ella material.

There are some great performances here, and the arrangements by Rob Mounsey are very suitable; yet it is Billy Childs' job on 'Someone to Watch Over Me' that stands out, as well as Alan Broadbent's ripping take on 'Miss Otis Regrets', delivered passionately by Linda Ronstadt. Gladys Knight is the singer on "Someone...", and here we are treated to a deeply artful vulnerability that this rare for this Empress of Soul. The one disappointment is Dianna Krall's stilted, lifeless delivery on 'Dream a Little Dream of Me', an effort on which Hank Jones' brilliance is sadly wasted. k.d. lang's reading of 'Angel Eyes' is a simmering delight, and Queen Latifah's classy and sassy offering on 'Lady is A Tramp', complete with the rarely heard opening verse, has me clamoring for more from her in this vein. She is just a damn fine singer! Overall, a fine collection.

Except for Diana Krall singing as the great Hank Jones plays piano, this so-called tribute is almost entirely worthless. R&B divas, none of whom could sing real jazz if their lives depended on it, serve schmaltzy, ersatz tributes to Ella, yet this calculated "celebration" sounds like Obama-era phoniness: it bears absolutely no relation to the spirit, integrity, and playful intelligence that were the hallmarks of Fitzgerald's style. The lone track featuring the honoree dueting with Stevie Wonder has some historical interest, yet why must the insipid introductory banter and live audience ooooohh-ahhhhing go on for well over a minute before the song begins???

This is a wonderful compilation of Ella Fitzgerald's music sung by some great artists. I would Highly recommend this album to any fan of Ella Fitzgerald, or any fan of good music with great vocals.
