A neglected garden. A cottage that holds a secret. A mysterious and handsome Frenchman. Prepare to be "spellbound by the sheer charm" ( Daily Express , UK) of Santa Montefiore's tender and powerful novel about passion, loss, and the healing power of love.

It begins as Miranda and David Claybourne move into a country house with a once-beautiful garden. But reality turns out to be very different from their dream. Soon the latent unhappiness in the family begins to come to the surface, isolating each family member in a bubble of resentment and loneliness.

Then an enigmatic Frenchman arrives on their doorstep. With the wisdom of nature, he slowly begins to heal the past and the present. But who is he? When Miranda reads about his past in a diary she finds in the cottage by the garden, the whole family learns that a garden, like love itself, can restore the human spirit, not just season after season, but generation after generation.

Wise and winsome, poignant and powerfully moving, The French Gardener is a contemporary story told with an old-fashioned sensibility steeped in the importance of family and the magical power of love.

Book Group Read
My first Santa Montefiore novel, I didn't expect to like the 'romance' angle, but it wasn't so bad, well the affairs were bad of course, but the story was wonderful and the characters are well developed. The love and magic are in the garden, which lasts for decades.

Set in England, another good story from Santa Montefiore about unrequited love. An enjoyable read :-)

Silly love story a la Harlequin. So many unbelievable aspects, eg .. love and respect for every animal, even spiders and ants, and dogs and cows yet think nothing of eating lamb and beef ... really ?? A man who loves a woman so much he puts his entire life on hold ...

One of my favourite authors. Goes between present and past and links them with little clues along the way that keep the reader absorbed in the story.

I found The French Gardener at the Dollar Tree when I was going through a rough patch and I immersed myself in the characters of the novel.

Then this spring, I dusted the novel off and reread it. I find that it reads like a classic with well-defined characters, parallel stories, and charming descriptions of the characters, setting, and circumstances. I wanted to pack my bags and head to rural England.

"Miranda, David, and their children have left crowded London for a beautiful if slightly shambolic country estate. But with David spending his weeks in London, their relationship is under even more strain (the kids, too, are struggling). Balancing house, estate, kids (one of whom is terrorising the neighborhood), career, and a failing marriage, Miranda is delighted when a charming, gentle Frenchman offers to return their gardens to their former glory. As their garden transforms, so too does the family. And there's an intriguing parallel story as well, one that Miranda finds in the diary of the estate's former owner. Readers who truly love the results of hard work in the garden will appreciate both the depictions of Hartington House's gardens and the connections between nature, love, and healing." I just discovered this author this summer and am so glad I did. Like Rosamunde Pilcher, Montefiore has charmed me with her tender novel about marriage, passion, loss, renewal, and the healing power of love. Miranda Claybourne has ditched her posh Notting Hill digs for the English countryside. Her idyll is short lived however – her husband is preoccupied with his job and his mistress, and the kids lash out at each other. Once Miranda finds the former owner’s secret journal, she becomes engrossed in dramatic events from 20 years prior. Ava, the former lady of the house, was a brilliant gardener with many secrets. Could the sudden appearance of the new French gardener, Jean-Paul, have a tie with the past?

Great little love story set in England. Goes back & forth between family who used to live in grand country estate, and the present owners. Wonderful French "gardener" worked the gardens and the women whose life he came into.
