"It would be difficult to imagine anyone reading this book without finding some new insight or inspiration, some new and unexpected testimony to the astonishing breadth of Christianity through the centuries." -- Philip Jenkins, author of The Lost History of Christianity

"Interesting, insightful, illuminating, and remarkably relevant." -- Marcus Borg, author of The Heart of Christianity

In the tradition of Howard Zinn comes a new history of Christianity that reveals its bottom-up movements over the past 2,000 years, which preserved Jesus's original message of social justice, and how this history is impacting the church today.

I think this book is a good starting point. It will probably expand your reading list, like it did mine.

A very readable history from ancient times, Middle Ages, the renaissance down to modern times. Focusses on the people that are less well-known.

This is a history NOT of saints and church leaders, BUT of ordinary people and their customs through the centuries: imitating Christ's life, studying scripture, hallowing time, giving hospitality, caring for the sick and imprisoned, peacemaking, making a pilgrimage, monasticism, praying the hours, praying the rosary, the Way of the Cross, 'dying well' (i.e. prepared), expanding the notion of neighbour to include followers of other religions + enemies + animals + the outcast + the environment; protesting sin and injustice within the church, reading, testifying, teaching, singing & praying, seeking justice, building family, questing for the inner light, promoting tolerance, seeking equality, building freedom, building community, and promoting ecumenism and pluralism. She divides history of Christianity into four periods, and within each she considers devotion and ethics. How varied has been this faith group!
