Add a QuoteAll of the lines about getting ready to go to school and putting on layers and layers remind me of my own childhood: "Getting ready to go to school was like getting ready for extended deep-sea diving"; "My kid brother looked like a tick about to pop!"; "I can't put my arms down!"
"Well... put your arms down when you get to school."
Ralphie: I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle!
Mrs. Parker: No, you'll shoot your eye out.
Mr. Parker: He looks like a deranged Easter Bunny.
Mother: He does not!
Mr. Parker: He does too, he looks like a pink nightmare!
Mr. Parker: Fra-gee-lay. That must be Italian.
Mrs. Parker: Uh, I think that says FRAGILE, dear.
Mr. Parker: Oh, yeah.
Ralphie: Oooh fuuudge!
Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] Only I didn't say "Fudge." I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the "F-dash-dash-dash" word!
Mr. Parker: [stunned] *What* did you say?
Ralphie: Uh, um...
Mr. Parker: That's... what I thought you said. Get in the car. Go on!
Ralphie as Adult: [narrating] It was all over - I was dead. What would it be? The guillotine? Hanging? The chair? The rack? The Chinese water torture? Hmmph. Mere child's play compared to what surely awaited me.

Add a CommentI semi-liked this family Christmas DVD. It was produced in 1983 attempting to replicate the 1940-1950 style. Using old props and retro clothes, the dialogue attempts to communicate the strong morals society and family values lived by in this time period. Religion and living your life with the 10 commandments was prevalent in early history. Some old-fashioned humor was applied in this movie. It effectively shows what life was like without all the new technology kids grow up to in our current life style. It is good for all ages. It is not too sexual for kids. There is some minor violence in the film which may scare the very young children. The story was not strong enough to hold my interest 100%. An adult may get bored watching this film. It is well acted.
This is a movie that I enjoyed as a kid, but have now seen so many times (thank TBS for the 24 hour repeats), that I have fallen way out of love with it. Show it to your kids when they are about 10ish, but you don't have to make this one a yearly tradition.
An American classic I can watch year after year!
Holds up to repeated semi-annual viewings, the characters are nicely over-the-top, characterized truly from a kid's point of view. Nostalgia with a nice twist, you might recognize yourself or a situation whether alive during this era or not. This familiarity is how A Christmas Story has accrued its classic status.
I remember when it was first released and the timing was awkward, it was out a couple of weeks too soon before Christmas to gain a huge holiday audience. Nonetheless as word got around over the years it gained status as a viewing tradition for many families. Not easy to compete with It's A Wonderful Life but this one is right up there. Solid storytelling and period design is spot on.
An absolutely delightful movie!!!
Everybody has their favorite holiday movie - this is one that I can watch again and again! Non-stop laughs as Ralphie tries to convince his parents and Santa that he really should get a "Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle" for Christmas.
Neighborhood bullies, double-dog-dares, major awards, and the Bumpus hounds... just a few of the delights from this holiday classic.
"You'll shoot your eye out, kid!"
A Christmas Story is a very funny holiday movie. I especially enjoy the kids' performances. This movie inspired The Wonder Years TV series. It is rated PG.
A hilarious Christmas holiday classic!
Love this movie- an all time Christmas classic. It's a funny and heartwarming look at Christmas with all the foibles, tension and fun that attend this time of the year.
Our family's favorite Christmas movie of all time. This is a must-watch every year for us!
