A yearlater, the Hernandez Brothers are back with the second eye-popping volume. Thisvolume gets off to a flying start with "Hypnotwist," Gilbert's 39-page wordlessepic about a beautiful, leggy redhead's surreal journey into a night filled withmysterious shady characters, dreamlike violence, and sparkling retro spikeheels. But is it real, or something else? Then, the concluding 50-page chapterof Jaime's acclaimed superhero mash-up "Ti-Girls Adventures," our protagonistBoot Angel learns more hard lessons about becoming a superheroine. Eventually, just about the entire cast gets together in Maggie's tiny, messy one-bedroomapartment. I'm a late adopter of Love and Rockets but I'm now totally immersed in the world. And suddenly the superheroes who have been kicking around doing their thing just off-scene are the focus! This is an amazing addition to the worlds of Love and Rockets and of superheroes in general. It's messy, it's chit-chatty, there are moms and babies and friends and old, retired heroes, and it's not very filmic, but it's awesome.
Incidentally, I couldn't read the Gilbert Hernandez contributions to this (the middle pages) but I'm a Jaime girl.
This comment applies to New Stories 1 as well, where the superhero arc started.
I also recommend All My Friends are Superheroes for another weird take on the superhero mystique.
