A Chinese girl and her mother are brought to NYC by her aunt who petitioned for them to get US visas, as if she were helping them. Actually she had them work in her husband's clothing manufacturing sweatshop as slaves, having them live illegally in a condemned heatless empty building they owned. They knew no English upon arriving and all the people in the sweatshop only spoke Chinese. But the very young ( only 6 when she arrived) girl was brilliant and somehow learned English, went to a school miles from the building, and got outstanding grades while working backbreaking hours helping her mother in the sweatshop. She gets a scholarship to a prestigious high school and ends up a neurosurgeon. Wonderful story. I gave it to Lesa and told Victoria, Mark's friend who is Chinese, to read it. The girl who narrates the bood was wonderful.
