After finally catching serial killer and occult 'sorcerer' Lord Blackwood, legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson can close yet another successful case. After his execution, Blackwood mysteriously returns from the grave and resumes his killing spree, Holmes must take up the hunt once again. Contending with Watson's new fiancée and the dimwitted head of Scotland Yard, the determined detective must unravel the clues that will lead him into a twisted web of murder, deceit, and black magic, not to mention the deadly embrace of temptress Irene Adler.

He's uncouth. He's unconventional. He's Holmes. His pulse never seems to race, especially with Robert Downey Jr.'s performance that adds a coolness to the role. He is methodically dismantling the mystery, mostly by happenstance, while simultaneously infuriating his partner Watson (played by a strait-laced Jude Law). The ladies play a significant role here, too, with the contrast of the governess Mary that Watson wants to marry with the wily criminal mastermind that Sherlock loves. Regardless, it all stems back to that most elementary fraternity between Holmes and Watson. Is there a fault I must pick? Sadly, yes. I expected a Sherlock film to be more focused on the case, but this flick is more interested in the spectacle of the protagonist's personality, followed by great theatrics. It's a thoroughly interesting albeit not hair-raising introduction to Sherlock. As long as you enjoy Robert Downey Jr.'s acting (specifically the charismatic arrogance from IRON MAN which he borrows from amply), then you will most likely enjoy SHERLOCK HOLMES. If not, you'll struggle to get through the running time. Being of the former group, I still recommend this film, despite its visible cracks.

Did you ever read Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories and think "Man, this stories need to be more extreme! More badass! Like, chug some energy drinks bro!" Well, we have a movie for you. 2009's "Sherlock Holmes" is a punching, bloody, action-heavy Sherlock Holmes, as played by Robert Downey, Jr. with a distracting British accent. To be fair, Brits are constantly playing Americans. Jude Law is his Watson, Mark Strong is his nemesis, Eddie Marsan is Lastrade, and Rachel McAdams is the femme fatale. It's directed with typical flash and frivolity by Guy Ritchie and it's superficially entertaining. I liked the occult angle, even if it was kind of a rip off of Alan Moore's "From Hell." It did have a lot of explosions and punching. Followed by a sequel. The huge marketing possibilities are afoot!

Sherlock Holmes is really entertaining, especially when you have Robert Downey Jr speaking in a British accent. The movie is really interesting and the relationship between Watson and Holmes shows that. Holmes is always curious of his surroundings and is always ready for anything suspicious whereas Watson acts like normal people. I like the fact that Holmes and Watson have two completely different personalities. Holmes’s thinking ability is a gift which makes the movie even more amazing in action. The plot was nicely done as well. I thought the whole plot revolved around black magic but actually there was no black magic involved at all. Overall, I think this movie is a great movie to watch.

I watched the first one, so a little confused because some of the comments are about the sequel.

Anyway, I thought it was a decent action film with some witty dialogue and twists (even if you could see them from the beginning). Definitely a different interpretation of Holmes, which is neither good nor bad.

SO MUCH FUN!
I love this Sherlock 'version'! With all the British Sherlock movies, shows, books and videos from the past (all of which I've enjoyed) I thought there just couldn't be another good one.
WRONG!
This movie is a delight. Made me want to go out & buy the soundtrack. Also, the way this movie portrays Sherlock's "ratiocination" is quite effective. Action is engaging and I recommend it h highly!

Benedict Cumberbatch is, both physically and characteristically, more faithful to the original, but the love, loyalty, and repartee between these characters is definitely worth watching. The science and detection are questionable, and the action tends to be of the "things blow up real good" variety.

It's hard with the BBC production of Sherlock to see in retrospect any other remake (as politicsownus) pointed out. There are a few good bits, one amazing Guy Ritchie scene, but for the most part it was pretty boring. Nothing really to talk about, which made me sad because i really like Guy Ritchie, i expected more...

I didn't care about none of the characters in this totally unexpected and unnecessary REMAKE of what probably used to be a good mystery/suspense program period.Because of this EXTREMELY NARCISSISTIC and EXTREMELY ARROGANT REMAKE,this detective went from being like the GOLD standard of critical thinkers and mentally stimulating puzzle solving to an action hero that is a tough guy now. From brains to extremely lucky brawn now ladies and gentlemen,BUT I DIGRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sherlock Holmes: Stop complaining.
Dr. Watson: Complaining! How am I complaining? I'm not complaining! I never complain! I don't complain that you practice your violin at three in the morning, that you make a mess of my rooms -
Sherlock Holmes: Our rooms.
Dr. Watson: Our rooms then, I don't complain that you steal my clothes -
Sherlock Holmes: Uh, we have a barter system.
Dr. Watson: I don't even complain that you kill my dog!
Sherlock Holmes: Our dog. Gladstone is our dog.
Dr. Watson: But what I do take issue with is you trying to sabotage my relationship with Mary!

There is a problem and our best detective has to fix it. A *practicutioner* (can't spell) of "black magic" is jailed and hanged but he's still running amognst the citezens of what ever town (i think it is london) this movie is set in. He has caused a series of deaths that you can believe to be "black magic". Borrow this item to see the satonishing finish. It's not as it seems. :)
