Tiger
The Real Story
Large Print - 2010 | Large print ed
Tiger Woods was born to parents who had seemingly ridiculously high expectations for their newborn. Selecting the unlikely venue of golf, they groomed their son for the fame and influence they believed he was destined for. At twenty, Tiger made his debut in a Nike commercial. "Hello, world," he said. "Are you ready for me?" And for the next 13 years, Tiger was the icon his parents had primed him to be. He conquered the world of golf with astonishing skill, and became a Madison Avenue darling. His squeaky clean persona made him the hottest commodity in sports.
Tiger settled down, started a family, and with a net worth of close to a billion dollars, his life appeared to be perfection itself - until the night his Escalade hit a mailbox at the end of his driveway. Overnight, Tiger became the poster boy for self-destruction.

Add a CommentI like a good, well written sports biography... but ... this probably doesn't qualify. While light on the salacious details of Tiger's extramarital escapades, at a general level, "People" writer Steve Helling does a decent job outlining the life leading up to that fateful 2009 Thanksgiving car accident. My crankiness has more to do with style : call me crazy, but even the best biographer & one with unlmited time/access cannot really know what their subject is truly thinking or feeling. Helling constantly writes as if he knows what is going on in Tiger's mind -- and yet, one of the biggest surprises about this particular star's fall from grace was how well hidden Tiger kept his internal "stuff." Extended passages describing what Mr. Woods was feeling or thinking at a precise moment in time annoyed, rather than enlightened; Readers are smart enough to know they'll just never know what was going on internally, so please : stick to the facts! Enough facts can be strung together about Tiger's early years, though, to perhaps realize that, at some point, this picture perfect man was going to crash and burn. Probably worth reading for die hard Tiger / golf fans.
