In bleak midwinter, the people of Shipcott are shocked by the murder of an elderly woman in her bed. As snow cuts off the village, local policeman Jonas Holly is torn between catching a brutal killer and protecting his vulnerable wife, Lucy.

When the inquiry is commandeered by an abrasive senior detective, Jonas finds himself derided by his colleagues and ashamed to admit to Lucy that he's been sidelined. It seems his first murder investigation may be over before it's begun. But when he receives a series of increasingly sinister anonymous notes, Jonas is thrust back into the center of the case. Someone in the village is taunting him, blaming him for the tragedy. Someone thinks he's not doing his job; someone seems to know every move he makes. And soon Jonas has to ask: Who's hunting who?

Tightly written and exciting until the ending, which I found not credible.

A very intriguing, disturbing whodunit - very well written, hard to put down, and really surprised me with its conclusion. I've been reading stories/novels for 55 years and I don't impress easily! Try this one, and also "Rubbernecker" by this author.

Totally enjoyable with some character overlap with Belinda Bauer's first novel 'Blacklands' but a stand alone story none-the-less. A great read with a very surprising ending.

Different but compelling. As you read you realize that the author is giving you bits and pieces. This may put some readers off, but if you keep reading you will be rewarded with a haunting story.

Very sinister English mystery. Takes pace in a rural village.

Characters are very well defined.

I couldn't believe the outcome of the story.

I want to read more from this author.

This second book by Belinda Bauer is even better than her first. Great to see she has incorporated a main character from her first book. Very interesting ending, pretty much unexpected until very close to the book's conclusion.

Belinda Bauer knows how to keep up the suspense.
