Other books cover basic knitting much more understandably, notably Zimmerman. However, the photos are wonderful and fun to browse. The book gives an excellent idea of how different stitch patterns will look. Then you can apply the methods to your own creation or add it to the pattern of your choice.
great reference for intermediate and above for design, pattern/swatch experimentation. Digital version is great for travel/portability. It's easily bookmarked for reference when creating a project. I like being able to quickly reference just the page I need and not have to carry a heavy book. Also enjoyed paper edition for home usage/knit club sharing. It makes for quick browsing/consulting between people when designing a scarf or hat. The photos and instructions to swatch saves time to determine if pattern, color and yarn choice are compatible. With each year of gaining more yarn skills, this reference becomes more and more useful for design and customization.
Decent stitch encylopedia, but not many projects.
