Good research, good writing, scathing critique.
Excellent book. Krakauer really did his research here.
MUST read "three cups of tea" first! it is much easier to understand with the "3 cups of tea" background. then look up Greg Mortenson/three cups of tea on the internet.
Oh my! I, like lots of others, have read both "Three Cups of Tea" and "Stones into Schools" by Greg Mortenson. Jon Krakauer is a methodical, detailed-oriented writer, who does incredible and careful research. He was also a believer until he started finding out that Mortensen's books, as well as what he says he accomplished are more fiction than nonfiction.
How disappointing to find out that Motenson has stolen millions of dollars from the charity and that his accomlishments are more embellishment than fact. Did you know that although the charity pays for all of the costs for promoting Mortenson's books, HE actually keeps all of the money generated by the books? We're talking about millions of dollars. How disappointing!
It would be tempting to dismiss Karakauer, but if you have read any of his other books, you will know that his credibility level is extremely high. Believe him, even though it's painful to believe how Morenson has deceived the public.
Another great piece of writing from Jon Krakauer. Anything he writes on is absolute gold. One of my favorite authors out there
I think Krakauer's book is important -- if you are taking money from people for whatever good cause, you should be scrupulously honest and transparent. And you should leave your ego behind. Krakauer shows Mortenson, for all his fine intentions and some good outcomes, did none of this.
Our high opinion of Jon Krakauer was completely reversed when we read this book. His condemnation of Greg Mortenson as a liar appears to be based on some minor discrepancies in dates and locations and perhaps some enhancements of actual events. It sounds to us a bit like sour grapes.
The fact remains that Greg did build a number of schools, and that he used donated monies to fly to some fund raising events does not constitute fraud.
