Following his divorce and the loss of his job as a homicide detective with the LAPD, Jesse Stone travels across the country to Paradise, Massachusetts where he is recruited by the town's board of selectmen to become the new Chief of Police. But things are not quite so heavenly in Paradise, as Stone starts off his first day on the job investigating a domestic abuse case that leads to a money-laundering scheme possibly involving bank manager Hasty Hathaway-- one of the men responsible for hiring Stone.

Sequentially this was the second Jesse Stone film released to public audiences, however it was chronologically the first film so it's a prequel to the first film released. Jesse Stone is an alcoholic cop in Santa Monica who finally loses his job and his wife Jen. He interviews for a job in Paradise, Massachusetts, and surprisingly gets the job even though he interviews drunk. Turns out the reason for this is that one of the prominent citizens on the town board is running several illegal operations out of Paradise and assumes Jesse will be too drunk to catch him. The outgoing Police Chief, Lou, retires and is murdered in the first 10 minutes of the film, setting the stage for the rest of the film, solving his murder. This is also the episode with Joe Genest, a killer and drug runner who beats his ex-wife until Jesse stops him.

"Night Passage" should be given some kind of pep pill. Most of the time we see Jesse Stone drinking himself into a sorrowful state of self-pity. But his dog comes down with kidney failure and has to be put down. I had to put my own dog down with the same ailment. The story of a small town series of murders and sexual infidelities does nothing for me.
