The first book in a new series starring an acting teacher with a surprising talent.

Decker Roberts has the dangerous gift of detecting the truth. Only his closest friends know, and he keeps his identity secret from the companies that pay him to tell them if the people they are planning to hire are truthful. But Decker's carefully compartmentalized life starts to fall apart. His house burns down, his credit cards are cancelled, his bank loan is called, and his studio is condemned. He realized that he must have heard something in one of his "truth telling" sessions that someone didn't want him to know. Decker has to go on the run and figure out why he's been targeted. There's also a government agent hunting him who seems to know absolutely everything about Decker Roberts' identities--real and false--and other people of "his kind."

How will Decker find out which truth was endangering his life? Who betrayed him and revealed all his secrets? Decker needs to find answers quickly, before knowing the truth turns from a gift into a deadly curse.

A painfully awful read. Read to the end ... almost ... had 10 pages left and just couldn't bear it anymore. Pretentious and sappy. Simplistic plot. Only gave it a chance in my quest for new authors.

The Placebo Effect is the first in a series called the Junction Chronicles. It features several people with paranormal abilities. In the series opener Decker Roberts has his credit cards cancelled, his bank accounts cleaned out, and his house burned down plus the NSA wants to use his gift for its own benefit. Roberts can tell when people are lying with 100% certainty. He has to track down who is trying to ruin his life and kill him. The story was entertaining although there were grammatical errors that Rotenberg, a theatre director, shouldn't make. For example, people are hanged not hung. That usage works in westerns but is incorrect elsewhere. The conclusion doesn't wrap everything up, hence a sequel.

Too far out for my taste!

I picked it up on Aug 9 and am going to return it on Aug 12. Read 20 pages and decided not to waste any more time.

I got through the first 30 pages and returned it. Boring.
