Five children meet on the first day of kindergarten. In the years that follow, they become friends and more than friends. Together, they will find strength, meet challenges, face life's adventures, endure loss, face stark realities, and open their hearts. In this moving novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel traces their unforgettable journey--full of tests and trials--as three boys and two girls discover the vital bonds that will last a lifetime.
Gabby, Billy, Izzie, Andy, and Sean--each bursting with their own personality, strikingly different looks and talents, in sports, science, and the arts. Each drawn by the magical spark of connection that happens to the young. At the exclusive Atwood School, on a bright September day, starting in kindergarten they become an inseparable group known to outsiders as the Big Five. In this rarefied world, five families grow closer, and five children bloom beside one another, unaware of the storms gathering around them.
As they turn from grade-schoolers to teenagers, seemingly perfect lives are buffeted by unraveling families, unfortunate missteps, and losses and victories great and small. And, one by one, they turn back to the Big Five to regain their footing and their steady course. But as they emerge from Atwood and enter the college years, the way forward is neither safe nor clear. As their lives separate and diverge, the challenges and risks become greater, the losses sharper, and the right paths harder to choose, in a journey of friendship, survival, and love.
In what may be her most intricate and emotionally powerful novel yet, Danielle Steel tells a heart-wrenching, ultimately triumphant story that spans decades, weaves together a vivid cast of characters, and captures the challenges we face in life--sometimes, if we're lucky, with a friend forever by our side.

I'm very surprised at these negative comments. The story of five friends who meet in kindergarten and how events in their lives impact them. Not a romantic tale, but a glimpse into what children of today are faced with. Keep a tissue close by.

This is a great story about five friends who met as children and grew up together thru the ups and downs of their lives!!

Disappointing! I used to be an avid Danielle Steel fan starting with The Promise. But, over time, I became bored with similar, predictable plots. I still believe Ms. Steel is a talented writer, but she took some wrong turns. Her writing appears lazy, as if it needs to be better plotted, refined, and edited. I wonder if she should consider finally using a word processor, instead of an outdated typewriter when writing her novels. Then, it'd be easier to make much-needed editing changes. I probably won't read any more of her books, but I still wish her the best.

sweet story of friends..

One of the most disappointing novels. There are 5 key young people with 3 peripheral young people making a total of 8. 4 of these young people are killed off in this novel. When your main emotional tickle is the death of half of the key characters it seems to me lazy writing. The story line of 5 youngsters meeting in kindergarten and forming a deep friendship that travels throughout life is lovely and full of potential for a great story. It did not materialize.

Boring! She's getting more and more un-interesting as her books come out, which is a shame. This one was just ramblings really, a thin plot and was a real snooze-fest. And depressing. Don't waste your time.

Excelent book easy to read

I have to say I was less than impressed with this story. In typical Danielle Steel fashion, the story is about affluent people, but this time with a bit of a twist by making it about the children of affluent families. I like the concept of this story; however, didn't like the way the story progessed and ended. She could have done so much more with this story. 3 out of 10 for me.

Loved all her books in general but I had a hard time to follow this book. I returned it to library without finishing it. But I will try reading it again. Not up to par I thought.
What a great writer and person so dedicated to her family, her children and her books.

I did not like this book.. almost did not finish it, but decided that I should give it a shot. I was very surprised at the story line being SO very unbelievable. I have not read Danielle steel for years, but used to read EVERY one of her books when they came out. This one was a huge disappointment. I had a very difficult time with the writing style as well. I cannot figure out why she chose to begin so many sentences with the word AND.. That really drove me crazy. It was just not a very realistic story and I would not recommend it. Story was a bit over the top. Could so many bad things REALLY happen to one group of friends??? I don't think so and I surely hope not!
