Violet Wister (Greta Gerwig) is a natural-born leader. Together with the help of her conscientious friend Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and their gorgeous pal Heather (Carrie MacLemore), Violet uses aroma and musical therapy to help her possibly suicidal classmates. When newly arrived transfer student Lily (Analeigh Tipton) seeks admission into their social circle, she's welcomed with open arms. While Lily appreciates having a group to be a part of, she soon realizes that Violet may not be a flawless friend.

i didn't enjoy this film which i purchased for 2 bucks and eventually brought to third place books to sell to, but they don't purchase dvds, so i went downstairs to the library, and the public bathroom, on the way. i'll never leave my possessions outside the door in the little hallway again, as when i returned to them after a swift pee, the dvds were missing. surely the crossroads bookstore would have given me 50 cents, as lately greta has become rather famous. when, i wonder, are the stories going to surface about the sex abuse cases in Hollywood between up- and- coming females and established lesbians? let's bring it all out of the closet, ladies and gentlemen!

This one was a random borrow, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it. Some might call it a chick-flik, and while it is a British Rom-Com, that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable for both genders. The actor and actresses have real chemistry, the humor is fun and witty, and even the production crew has fun with the audience at the end.

Back in 1988, there was a movie called Heathers that handled a similar subject matter better. It was both darker and funnier. In Damsels, Greta Gerwig is about the only saving grace with her quirky charm. This movie plods along not sure what story it's trying to tell. It's a peek into campus life where the young males are either complete idiots or borderline sociopaths. Meanwhile, otherwise intelligent and attractive young women students fall for them. Is this a male fantasy movie for men who ask themselves, "How stupid and/or insensitive can I be and still get the girl?"

Quirky humor but I can't recommend this because it doesn't hold together. Especially at the end, it feels like the director walked off and someone just pieced together some bits. Not clear what they were trying to convey.

Probably Stillman's most accessible movie, given the number of actual jokes, but also full of his usual subtle brilliance. Those who demand a strong plot, however, should probably skip it.

This is Whit Stillman's first film in twelve years. I enjoyed his earlier films, but this one was cringe-inducing.

After enjoying Metropolitan and The Last Days of Disco, I was disappointed in this one. I bailed after about 20'. Too stilted. Characters not quite engaged or engaging.

Tedious and pretentious. Violet, the main character, has long monologues explaining things. Fast forwarded through most of it.
