Let's Go for a Drive is one of the favorites in my household. My 4-year old loves basically every Mo Willems book we've read together, but this one is special because she gets right into yelling "WAIT!!!" every time it comes up in the book. As Gerald and Piggie celebrate new items they've deemed necessary for the drive, this also prompts celebratory dancing. Additionally, this has led to reenactments of the book in daily life. Tons of fun.

I use this book to help children with autism understand different kinds of friendships, and how to have your needs met while acknowledging the needs of the other person. Elephant relies on Piggie to solve all of his problems, and he's rude about it. Piggie is rather helpless and complies to keep Elephant from getting more upset, as well as maintain the friendship.
Still, children love the characters.
We learn why this is a fiction piece, but we have nonfiction relationships.

Our 6 yr old loves the Elephant and Piggie series; the colorful pages, the short sentences and the loveable characters have greatly influenced him on his reading. He can't get enough of these books!

In "Let's Go for a Drive!", Mo Willems employs his classic Elephant and Piggie formula: perfectly placed speech bubbles, effective use of white space, endearing facial expressions, phonetic play and just plain silliness.

When Gerald proposes that he and Piggie go for a drive, Piggie enthusiastically agrees and the two chant: “Drive! Drive! Drivey-drive-drive!” Gerald, a master planner, insists that they bring a map, sunglasses, umbrellas, bags and, of course, a car. But wait: Piggie doesn’t have one (“[a] pig with a car would be silly”) and neither does Gerald. Whatever will they do?

The pair’s chorus becomes both playful and educational; after “Map! Map! Mappy-map-map!”, children will attempt to fit sunglasses, umbrellas etc into the same pattern. And, in the end, Gerald and Piggie come up with a charming solution that satisfies all Willems fans.

Another great Elephant and Piggie adventure! As they prepare all of the things they might need to go for a drive: sunglasses, map, umbrellas in case it rains, and suitcases, they realize they are missing one crucial thing: a car!! Funny as usual!!
