Vaguely reminiscent of Camille with Greta Garbo as both are set in late 1800's in Paris, Camille is better (by far), and Chinatown re: the father/daughter relationship which is confusing at best, never really clear at worst; political aspect too hazy to figure out really (lost in sexual aspect which are more than clear) get message across . One hears "Just a Gigalo" as sung by Louis Prima in the background while watching this move. In other words, forgettable r/t story.

Huge dissapointment considering the 3 amazing actressess in it. Robert Pattison is terribly cast as the main character, he should stick to vampire movies. The plot is slow paced and dull. The movie sets are beautiful and sumptuous but not worth watching this boring dribble to the end!

Horrible movie

Great cast, bad movie. The whole premised seemed to be about Robert Pattinson showing his but (mind you, not a bad one) as he hopped from one woman to another. The storyline was poor.

Five bright stars for Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci.
Robert Pattinson? Give me a break! He should stay in a role of this vegetarian vampire even if it's the last movie he ever acts in. Bel Ami character offers so much none of which Pattinson is able show.

Skip It – Bel Ami (2012) 102 min. Robert Pattinson plays an opportunist in this period piece. Slow moving and dull.

The story itself is kind of eh! The acting is not as bad as all the reviewers said. Still, the story needs more substance.

Filmed economically in Budapest, Bel Ami is an adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s 1885 story with all the grandeur and sweep of fin-de-siecle Paris. Robert Pattinson was badly miscast as Duroy, a man whose magnetic attraction to women allows him to rise from a penniless commoner to the heights of Parisian society. Pattinson's limitations as an actor are painfully evident among such an accomplished cast. He has a one-size-fits all expresssion which sometimes takes on vampirish overtones and a smile which looks as though it had been painful to produce. He portrays a character devoid of scruples or any depth of character: a true descendant of the Vicomte de Valmont in “Les Liaisons Dangereuses. With a better actor in the role of Duroy, this could have been a very good movie. But of course there's the teen audience to consider.
