A jobless thirty-something and a talented street performer help one another discover the transformative power of self confidence in this offbeat romantic comedy starring Jenna Fischer and Chris Messina. Written and directed by Lee Kirk, The Giant Mechanical Man opens to find Janice (Fischer) between jobs and stuck in a perpetual state of arrested development while living with her domineering sister. Attempting to gain employment at a zoo, she happens across Tim (Messina), a performance artist whose career as a "living statue" hasn't taken him very far in life. Meanwhile, as Janice succumbs to pressure to start dating a narcissistic self-help guru (Topher Grace), she realizes that Tim is the only person who has ever managed to make her feel good about herself.

I enjoyed this movie! Chris Messina from The Mindy Project played a likable, though not perfect character here, too. You can see the attraction developing between them. I wonder if Jenna Fischer made this film so that teens could see what a caring relationship is like.

After a long, hard week, this was a delightful little movie to cozy up and relax to. This movie is charming and romantic. I wish there had been more laughs -- but it was still a wholly worthwhile movie -- and there was one big, huge laugh that made up for fewer laughs. There were no deaths and no raw sex scenes -- appreciated that for a change. Most of all, after personally having experienced trying to find oneself -- and a job -- this left me with a feel-good vibe that hope is indeed valid even during the darkest of times.

Some insights into human character. Slow moving the story along. Don't put it high on your must see list!

It seems to start out about Chris Messina's street performer: why does he stand out there in the cold for hours, barely noticed? His girlfriend leaves him. Finally he gets a job at a zoo to support himself.
But then the movie turns to be about Jenna Fischer's unemployed, directionless young woman. There are bright spots, such as her tension with her younger sister who is more successful in a worldly way. Even when she meets Chris, the focus of the film seems to be on her. This is unfortunate, as while appealing, her character seems less fascinating than Chris's.
In the DVD extras, it turns out that Jenna and the writer/director fell in love and eventually got married.
A quiet but poignant and realistic romantic comedy.

I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed watching this movie. I think Jenna Fischer is one of the loveliest actresses and she and Chris Messina played opposite each other perfectly.

A rom-com that had a bit more depth in character. Definitely worth watching.
