The story follows Christopher Tietjens, a wealthy member of Edwardian England's upper class, as the country is drawn into World War One. Tietjens is at the center of a love triangle between his wife Sylvia, a treacherous socialite who is trying to destroy him, and his suffragette mistress, Valentine. The warfare Tietjens encounters as an officer in Europe is but a backdrop to a personal battle of conflicting loyalties, hidden passions and the rigid social expectations of his day.

Most attractive about this film are the strong characters portrayed by excellent casting. Young Judy Dench is quite a treat. All actors fit their parts in my mind's eye making this somewhat historically accurate series time well-spent.

I enjoyed this very much. It's an early role for Judi Dench (1964) and she is radiant. The production is BW, and a little dated, as one might expect, but there's considerable dramatic power in Ford Madox Ford's words and characters. An insightful treatment of WW1 history and issues, and PTSD, WW1-style.

Downton Abbey fans should check this one out. Most of the mini-series is set during WWI. It's funnier, but also more tragic. Tom Stoppard wrote the screenplay. Sometimes it feels like a satire, but then there are moments of absolute sincerity. Really satisfying.
