Yeeeeeeeeah...that felt like a special kind of pointless.

Not the usual kind of pointless, wherein two different groups of superheroes fight each other over a misunderstanding or somesuch but then at the end of the story things go back to being exactly as they were. Because, like it or lump it, "this changes everything."

No, this was the kind of pointless where one repeatedly questions why the story was plotted out quite the way it was, and also where one asks oneself: "am I even enjoying this?" an awful lot before it all just sort of ends.

Still, due credit to some of the writers and some of the artists for some memorable panels and repartée. But, on the whole, just an OK slog for a sleepy Sunday afternoon, which I will do my best to try and forget about as I read Avengers and X-Men titles moving forward.

The book is fine if you are a big Wolverine and Avengers fan.
It pretty throws the remaining X-Men under the bus for the most part (for which it had been building up for a while) and doesn't have the kinds of twists and turns you'd expect.
As a result you're left with pretty much a straightforward heroes vs heroes story. No dilemmas here. Just good heroes vs bad heroes. I'd skip it if you are into the deeper discussions that, in particular, the X-Men story lines are known for.

Phoenix is coming back and the young mutant Hope is destined to be the next host. Cyclops and the X-Men see this as a possible new hope for mutants, Captain America and the Avengers think this is just going to be Jean Grey all over again. As advertised, it is the ultimate superhero showdown.

It's a long arc though and some issues are little more disjointed from the others but having read a bit more ahead it's nice to have a few blanks filled in.

The mass amount of characters involved is a bit challenging at points but all in all it's a great spectacle of a crossover event with far reaching consequences.

One of Marvel's more recent big events brings together a number of writers and artists to tell the tale of the Avengers and the X-Men coming to blows (before everything drastically changes midway through). The artistic styles mesh fairly well- a rare thing with crossovers. Some of the writers, such as Jason Aaron, are far better than a couple of the others (Brian Bendis, Jeph Loeb), and it really shows- there's unevenness in the chapters of the story. The end result leaves something to be desired, though, given that a character who has been totally ethically and morally compromised for years does not get the only fate that made sense for him from a storytelling point of view: death.

Avengers VS X-men....Smack down! What you get from this comic is basically "What to do with Phoenix" (The Pheoenix is like a giant cosmic firebird with unbelieveable powers) X-Men want to tame it...Avengers want to end it once and for all. It leads you on a wild ride. And ,of course, you get some superhero brawls...
