The author has been writing about jazz for more than forty years, and is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship.
Crouch gives us a great biography, and a history of the rise of bebop. Sweet!

Beautifully written, with incredible insight. A compelling piece of work with nary a sour note. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in American history or contemporary music. It reminds me a little of Robert Caro's writing, a story told so well you forget it's non-fiction.

"The first of two volumes based on the life of one of the most talented and influential musicians of the 20th century reaches back past the legend to reveal Charlie Parker the wunderkind who was raised in the midst of the Depression in the wide-open town of Boss Tom Pendergast's Kansas City."
