This is a good album as a first album however personally I don't think it is; their best album. That being said if you enjoy the group or the type of music this one is not out of place in your library.

Let's say your kid comes to you one day and says "Daddy, what's heavy metal?" You play him "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath on the album "Black Sabbath." This is metal's patient zero. Released in 1970 and supposedly just recorded in a day, the Birmingham quartet's debut was critically savaged ("bulls*** necromancy" was a typical review), but it launched a thousand bands and still, over 40 years later, sounds dark and heavy, like nothing that came before. Everything from the cover to the band name to the vaguely evil lyrics would become the blueprint for metal. "Paranoid" and "Master of Reality" are more popular, but this comes on like a slab of concrete to the face and its darkness and murky roar were much more in touch with the times than all the hippie crap. We were living in evil times and Sabbath was channeling it. File under: Heavy. Heavy Duty. Rock and Roll.
