Towards the end of the second world war Dr Ludwig Guttmann, a brisk refugee from Nazi Germany, arrives at Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire and is appalled to find the partially paralysed spinal patients heavily sedated and left to rot with bed sores. He immediately begins a new regime, disposing of old equipment and sedatives, bringing him into conflict with stern Sister Edwards and pompous consultant Cowan, as well as the patients. However the sister backs him when she realises he is treating her charges as people, not patients, talking to them and involving them in musical entertainments and sporting activity. Soon Whitehall are sending him all their spinal patients and, with visits to the pub and wheelchair sports taught by an army sergeant, he becomes the men's hero. With the war over Ludwig organizes national wheelchair sports competitions which will in turn lead to the establishment of the Paralympic games.

We so often find true stories make the best movies. This is no exception. The acting and story line are both very good. At times extremely frustrating, at time hilarious and at times inspirational. A good viewing.

A great performance by Eddie Marsan in this docu-drama.

A film about the change in perception of the disabled from patients waiting to die, to men, like other men, who happen to be sitting in chairs. The writing is uneven: sometimes insightful, and sometimes preachy. But the actors can't be praised highly enough. Anyone viewer who doesn't tear up a little is whom I would call disabled.

Originally broadcast by BBC2 on August 16, 2012, this film shows the struggle of Ludwig Guttmann, who is a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany, sponsored to stay in the United Kingdom.
On arrival at the hospital, the patients are kept under sedation, and immobile in bed.
This condition leads the patients to bedsores, infection, and, in many cases, death.
Dr. Guttman insists that the best prognosis for the patients is to get them as mobile as possible.
However, he naturally faces the music.
As he gradually wins the staff over with his determination and optimism, Guttmann faces a further problem in the hopelessness of some of the patients.
Eventually, Guttmann organises a national disability sport competition, the first Stoke Mandeville Games, in the hospital grounds.
It is a heart-warming and uplifting docudrama.

What an inspirational movie! The best advice I can give you is don't read the DVD box or any reviews. See "The Best of Men" without knowing the main story. I just grabbed the movie off the library shelf and put it in my DVD player. It is now late November and this may be the best movie I saw all year! (We still have a month to watch a few more movies). It is my hope that you and your family will enjoy "The Best of Men" as much as my family!

Moving and honest portrayal of courage in all forms. The neurological surgeon, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann ("Poppa"), is a wise and brave hero. Guaranteed to make you laugh and cry and increase understanding of spinal injuries. All performances believable and story very inspiring. Highly recommend this movie.

I thought it was a little over-acted at times but found it to be an excellent quality movie. Success to me is being that person who inspires others to move towards living better lives.
