When a Swedish civil servant is murdered, the two leading detectives on the case, Anna Holt and Bo Jarnebring, find their investigation hastily shelved by an incompetent and corrupt senior investigator. Ten years later, Lars Johansson, having just joined the Swedish Security Police, decides to tie up a few loose ends left behind by his predecessor: specifically, two files on Swedes who had allegedly collaborated on the 1975 takeover of the West German embassy.

Excellent read.

As a lesbian, I found Detective Backstrom's homophobia hard to take. I assume he's supposed to be "comic relief" but he's not funny.

Don't read the Review (Barnes&Noble) as it gives away too much and will spoil the story. I agree with Publisher's Weekly review that it is a documentary style procedural, but very cleverly, carefully plotted and because of historical events during this period (75-89) has nuances of a spy story (but not a thriller). I disagree with Publisher's Weekly conclusion: I came away with feeling that some justice is meted out.
