In The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley, the emperor of Annur is dead, slain by enemies unknown. His daughter and two sons, scattered across the world, do what they must to stay alive and unmask the assassins. But each of them also has a life-path on which their father set them, destinies entangled with both ancient enemies and inscrutable gods.

Kaden, the heir to the Unhewn Throne, has spent eight years sequestered in a remote mountain monastery, learning the enigmatic discipline of monks devoted to the Blank God. Their rituals hold the key to an ancient power he must master before it's too late.

An ocean away, Valyn endures the brutal training of the Kettral, elite soldiers who fly into battle on gigantic black hawks. But before he can set out to save Kaden, Valyn must survive one horrific final test.

At the heart of the empire, Minister Adare, elevated to her station by one of the emperor's final acts, is determined to prove herself to her people. But Adare also believes she knows who murdered her father, and she will stop at nothing--and risk everything--to see that justice is meted out.

It took a while to get going and at no time (until the end) was it apparent that this was only the first installment. While I enjoy a lot of fantasy, I sometimes have a problem with being left in suspense waiting for the next year or so to find out what happened. That said, the main protagonists, both sons of the Emperor, are put through tough, unlikely and mainly unexplained training that is only partially explained by the end of this first book of three. The action comes to life about half way through at which time the book becomes a page turner. I look forward to reading the next two books, especially since so much remains unexplained in the story so far.

I enjoyed this however, serious editing misses. Not bad

Bloody Hell, could it have taken longer to get to the point? Or to have anyone at least pretend they were the least bit intelligent?
If these kids are supposed to be the saviors of this empire, they are pretty poor specimens for heroes. Fine, fine, if they have to be young and stupid, so be it. But not even their advisers seem to be helpful, at least they could be getting some good advise or anything that's not cryptic and complicated.
It took way too long to get this story started and the characters were just lucky, there was no real decisions that saved them, they just happened to survive and happened to get magic powers and happened to do nothing useful.
Moving on, though I don't know to what, apparently my choices need some reviewing.

Staveley spends very little time building back stories, which in this case often makes new details seem just too convenient. On the whole though, I'd recommend the series.

For those looking for a new "gritty" fantasy author, check out this first book in Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne. If you like Martin, Sanderson, or Abercrombie, give this book a try.

Fascinating and well-thought-out world building. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Excellent read! Picked it up and couldn't put it down! Read the entire book in one sitting and realized that the second one is noty even out yet, so I will have to wait for more from the world of Annur.

Suitable, I think for anyone from age 16 and above ,provided the younger reader is advanced and familar with the genre.

If you like this one,try anything by Brent Weeks. Super stories !!!!!

Once I was in to it, I couldn't put it down until 3:30 in the morning when I finished it. I've tried to pick up a new book 3 times since I finished and have not been able to do so. I'm still immersed in the Annurian empire and don't want to leave it yet. A VERY GOOD book - a terrific read. I highly recommend it.

I haven't been so captivated by a fantasy novel since reading Dune for the first time. A fully realized world, political system, and religion. Three dimensional characters to care about. Wonderful story.

"Kaden felt only calm, distance, as though he were no more than the wind rifling his robes, no more than the snow on the peaks, or the silent clouds scrubbing the sky."
