A complete course on Korean cuisine for the home cook by the YouTube star and the world's foremost authority on Korean cooking

Her millions of fans compare her to Julia Child. An Internet sensation, Maangchi has won the admiration of home cooks and chefs alike with her trademark combination of good technique and good cheer as she demonstrates the vast and delicious cuisine of Korea. In Maangchi's Real Korean Cooking, she shows how to cook all the country's best dishes, from few-ingredient dishes (Spicy Napa Cabbage) to those made familiar by Korean restaurants (L.A. Galbi, Bulgogi, Korean Fried Chicken) to homey one-pots like Bibimbap.

For beginners, there are dishes like Spicy Beef and Vegetable Soup and Seafood Scallion Pancake. Maangchi includes a whole chapter of quick, spicy, sour kimchis and quick pickles as well. Banchan , or side dishes (Steamed Eggplant, Pan-Fried Tofu with Spicy Seasoning Sauce, and refreshing Cold Cucumber Soup) are mainstays of the Korean table and can comprise a meal.

With her step-by-step photos--800 in all--Maangchi makes every dish a snap. A full glossary, complete with photos, explains ingredients. Throughout, Maangchi suggests substitutions where appropriate and provides tips based on her readers' questions.

We've been making Korean food once or twice a week for the past month, ever since getting this book out of the library. The specialty ingredients are easily found here in Calgary at the E-Mart, or other Asian groceries, and the food we've made has been delicious! Sure, you have to adjust the recipes a little to account for the altitude, but overall, we've been loving the simple, vibrant flavours of Korean cooking.

The Bean Sprout Rice and Black Bean Noodles are my current favourites, while my wife is a fan of the Spicy Pork. The only thing to watch out for, at least according to our palates, are recipes using dried anchovies. Those things are super fishy, so broths made with them may not appeal to everyone.

Other than that, I highly recommend this cookbook!

Maangchi rules. I've been following her on YouTube for a while and she is as entertaining as she is talented in the kitchen. Best thing is her personality comes through on these pages. I hope you like kimchi because she sure does and her recipes are chock full of inventiveness and simple Asian ingenuity. This book is a must for her fans or anyone even remotely interested in what it takes to collaborate and put together a delicious and authentic Korean dish. Plus she makes it look easy...and fun. So theres that.
