This must-read story is a confident, action-and-violence packed thriller, and future classic noir SF novel from a multi-award-winning author.

Four hundred years from now mankind is strung out across a region of interstellar space inherited from an ancient civilization discovered on Mars. The colonies are linked together by the occasional sublight colony ship voyages and hyperspatial data-casting. Human consciousness is digitally freighted between the stars and downloaded into bodies as a matter of course.

But some things never change. So when ex-envoy, now-convict Takeshi Kovacs has his consciousness and skills downloaded into the body of a nicotine-addicted ex-thug and presented with a catch-22 offer, he really shouldn¿t be surprised. Contracted by a billionaire to discover who murdered his last body, Kovacs is drawn into a terrifying conspiracy that stretches across known space and to the very top of society.

For a first-time SF writer to be so surely in command of narrative and technology, so brilliant at world-building, so able to write such readable and enjoyable SF adventure, is simply extraordinary.

There's a concept in advertising that I think can also be applied to writing, when trying to attract attention to your piece of writing, write important stuff first. At first, it seemed like thats where this book was going, there was a cool concept, a cool gag about how this character has the perfect stereotypical investigator body, complete with average looks and an addiction to smoking, but also an interesting commentary on how religious groups could see this new technology that are "sleeves". It's set up began well, but then the tone shifted dramatically, the author found it necessary to describe how horny nearly everyone is in the book. He takes the time to lay out a scene in which an attractive woman leads the protagonist to the millionaire who wants to give him an assignment, but puts a lot of emphasis on describing the woman's boobs, and how horny the protagonist is and a painting they pass that depicts a rocket that "didn't help" the investigator calm down. Not what I signed up for.

I tried but this one didn't pass the 50 page test. Sorry Mr. Morgan. If you want to read a GOOD noir mystery, try Jim Thompson or the master of the pulp fiction/mystery genre, Cornell Woolrich.

Got a good review from a website I frequent , so checked it out but it was too far out for me to read. Wasn't believable like it could happen in the future. Belongs in the science fiction fantasy realm .

A lot of sci fi with extra murder mystery sprinkled on top. If you liked Blade Runner give this a try.

If you like detective noir and hard science fiction, this is the book for you. The world is interesting and complex with a lot to explore. I only gave it three and a half stars because the story can get too caught up in side plot and details, making it hard to follow, and some of the world concepts aren't well-explained.

This book is more a murder mystery than good science fiction. There are better murder mysteries and science fiction books out there.

Although the author did a great job getting the "sensory" parts of this book down (mood, atmosphere, sensory perception), the plot was too scattered and un-focused for my liking. As such, I could only give it 2 stars. But since it was the author's first book, I'll likely try one of his later works as well.

I liked the book. It pushes past the reliogous nuts in this world that want to insult something they dont understand.

Interesting concept of swapping to various bodies - liked it and will try the next one now.

Despite the fact that Mr. Kovacs never met a female he didn't want to boink (and generally does)... plus the occasional feeling that this was a "hard-boiled" detective novel disguised as science fiction (I like SF... I don't like detective novels)... plus the movie script feel to the whole thing (no messy star contracts for the studio, the hero can be played by anyone!).... despite all that, I enjoyed this well enough to propel me into the next Takeshi Kovacs novel.
