"Through Blood and Sweat takes readers on a 300-kilometre march in the footsteps taken by the soldiers of 1st Canadian Infantry Division in 1943. As part of Operation Husky 2013, a group of Canadians walked this route to honour the memory of the nation's soldiers who fought in Sicily seventy years earlier and whose sacrifice has been largely forgotten. Mark Zuehlke was one of the Operation Husky 2013 marchers. He uses this arduous task as a focal point for a contemplative look at the culture of remembrance and the experience of war."--Provided by publisher.

Zuehlke, B.C. author of a series of impressive books about Canadian Army battles in WWII--including Operation Husky (the liberation of Sicily)--was invited to participate in "Operation Husky 2013", a commemorative march across Sicily to honour those troops. Zuehlke re-lives that experience in July 2013, while also relating it to some of the marches and battles our troops endured in July 1943.
The march was the brainchild of Montreal businessman Steve Gregory, who felt the Sicily campaign was unjustly forgotten by Canadians--especially compared to the D-Day campaign and battles in France, Belgium and Holland. As a first-time event, there were some logistic challenges and failures--not to mention 30-to-40 degree heat, but the spirit of the march and the marchers was admirable.
It has me thinking about possible future trips to see some of these battlegrounds, where Canadian troops are rightly revered as heroes.

Very interesting story. It gives details of the long walk and the history of the Sicilian campaign as they go along. This is a great Canadian story of a tribute and memorial to the soldiers of that campaign. I was shocked by the fact that not one Canadian news media were even interested in this story, not even that scion of left wing BS, the CBC. Shame on you CBC!!

There was just too much personal conflict or so it seemed amongst the 'marchers'. And not enough detailed information on the routes and street names for those who are trying to follow on Google Maps. The trek itself seemed to hopscotch back and forth. This could have been a really great book but for the confusion about the itinerary, it just seemed poorly planned. Still if a person is interested in this type of trip, it does have interesting bits.
