Edgar-award nominated author David Rosenfelt's hilarious hero, Andy Carpenter, takes on a high-profile murder case, with his favorite golden retriever, Tara, by his side--now with a new cover look.
Whether dueling with new forensics or the local old boys' network, irreverent defense attorney Andy Carpenter always leaves them awed with his biting wit and winning fourth-quarter game plan. But Andy prefers the company of his best friend, Tara, to the people he encounters in the courtroom. Tara, a golden retriever, is clearly smarter than half the lawyers who clog the courts of PassaicCounty. However, just as it seems Andy has everything figured out, his dad,New Jersey's legendary ex-D.A., drops dead in front of him at a game in Yankee Stadium. The shocks pile on as he discovers his dad left him with two unexpected legacies: a fortune of $22 million that Andy never knew existed . . . and a murder case with enough racial tinder to burn down City Hall. Struggling to serve justice and bring honor to his father, Andy must dig up some explosive political skeletons--and an astonishing family secret that can close his case (and his mouth) for good.

The plot is simple but satisfying, the defense attorney lead is a lovable smart ass, the court room scenes are well-written, and the humour is often LOL funny. First in the Andy Carpenter series, the book is a pleasant, lightweight diversion and quick read. I hope there is more about dogs in the future books!

The book is very good, the characters interesting and just complicated enough to keep you guessing, and the ''action" is pretty consistent with just a few of Rosenfelt's personal opinion lectures thrown in.
This is probably intended as a "man's" book, but the female characters are so well designed and so probable that I found it very appealing--plus did I mention the adorable, spoiled dog?

This is the beginning of a new reading relationship for me. Thoroughly enjoyable; I will definitely be following up with the subsequent novels by this author. There is a golden retriever in this story -- how can anyone say no to that! Great plot development, likable characters, and enough twists that putting the book down was almost impossible. I definitely wanted to keep turning the page!

This novel is the beginning of a great series! Andy Carpenter is a talented lawyer who also loves dogs. In this first story, he inherits a fortune from his dead father and has to sort out the truth about his father's life and death while defending a black man on death row. Wonderful characters and a dog that'll capture your heart.

Fast-paced who-dun-it. I will definitely be reading more "adventures" of quick-on-the-quip lawyer/"detective", Andy Carpenter. Very fun read.

I really like the character in this book and the way the author writes. There are more in the series and someday I'll check some more of the books out!
