Lou's dad has been addicted to painkillers since an accident left him unable to work. He's a good, loving dad, but kind of useless. Lou's mother, Zoe, a successful novelist, abandoned Lou at birth and showed no interest in her until three years ago, when Lou was twelve. Their relationship since then has been strained, but when Lou's dad has a stroke, there is nowhere else for her to go while he recovers. Lou struggles to find her bearings and figure out why her mom left her all those years ago.

Overall, I feel pretty 'meh' about this novel. While I'm highly appreciative of encountering a YA novel set in Canada (in places I've even been!), the novel did nothing to truly impress me. Lou as a character tends towards the whinier end of the spectrum, and while the quality of her life definitely allows for that, I was sort of tired of her internal monologues about 80 pages in. Also, Lou's obsession with her mother's novel and her enduring belief that it is all about her and her mother wore thin after a while, and had you wishing she'd encounter someone who could remind her that it is fiction. The descriptive passages in the novel are very well done and Stevenson does an excellent job of describing Drumheller but some of the dialogue is a bit stilted and a few more contractions would have improved it vastly. While the themes of identity and family are interesting, I'm not sure if Stevenson ever made any profound conclusions and the highly cliched ending sentence was just too twee for me. I enjoyed some of the smaller details, such as the metafictional element of Lou's mother's novel having the same title and cover as the actual book does while dealing with the same themes. I was left feeling pretty blah about it, but it could definitely be appealing to some teens.
