Chester Raccoon is nervous about going to school for the first time. His mother tells him about all of the wonderful things Chester will get to do at school. Plus she tells him a secret. She places a kiss in his hand and tells him that any time during school that he feels the need for love from home, he can place his hand to his cheek and think, "Mommy loves you." When mother raccoon brings Chester to school he in turn places a kiss in her hand and gives her a "kissing hand."

The illustrations in this story are colorful, rich and lovely. Every page is a joy to look at.

The story is very sweet. It is a wonderful way to talk about fears about school and the comfort of thinking of a parent's love. The raccoon goes to school at night because he is a nocturnal animal. This is another learning opportunity to teach about why Chester does not go to school during the day. I absolutely love the end where mother raccoon puts Chester's kiss against her cheek and says, "Chester loves you," because sending children to school for the first time is hard on moms too.

A lovely story. I highly recommend for any age of child going to school for the first time.

Very sweet. I can certainly see myself reading this to a child in the future.

One of our favourite starting school books. Perfect for nervous kids and parents alike.

My son's JK teacher read this book at the beginning of the school year. She then had the students trace their hand on paper and attach a sticker of "kissing lips" on the palm. The kids were then encouraged to share it with their parents and carry it in their back pack each day, if they found the transition to school difficult. Then, they would know that they too had a kiss from Mom/Dad with them all day in case they needed it.

This book was too mature for my one-and-a-half year old, but I liked the story and will definitely check it out again in a year or two if the message seems timely at that point.

This book provides toddlers with a helpful resolution to the topic of separation anxiety. But once ours had grasped its message, he largely lost interest in reading it any more.
