Gretel--yes, that Gretel--is now all grown up and working as a private investigator in 18th century Bavaria. Her professional interest is piqued when she begins to hear whispers of of mysterious goings-on off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein: sailors are disappearing, and there are rumors of mermaids and sea creatures and all manner of slippery, sea-based happenings. Ordinarily, Gretel's interest in sea-life does not extend beyond that which is edible, doused in butter and garlic, and already on the plate before her. However, funds are low, and the captain of the ship Arabella makes a tempting offer of good pay and a free cruise in return for her detective services. With a splendid new wig packed, Hans as her bodyguard on the journey north, and the promise of two weeks of fine dining and erudite company whilst sailing around the picturesque Friesian islands, what could possibly go wrong?

As soon as one case is finished, another begins. And so our intrepid heroine finds herself in hot water (pun intended) as she tries to track down an elusive mermaid, enlists the aid of a sea sprite that no one else seems to see (people WILL ignore the strange and unusual) and find a murderer.

Ms. Brackston’s wit and abilities as a literary raconteur remain as keen as ever. While we can laud Ms. Gretel’s ingenuity, quick thinking, compassion and her phenomenal skills as a negotiator, we’re not meant to take her too seriously. She remains inordinately conscious about her personal appearance and focused to an extraordinary degree on her hair. (Her obsession with wigs remains a mystery; if she can get her hair looking ship-shape [heh], why such focus on perukes?) Yet, in spite of her constant attempts to look fabulous, she always winds up a right mess when the dashing General Ferdinand von Ferdinand stumbles upon her.

It’s great to see more about Gretel of Gesternstadt and I look forward to reading more of her adventures. She is a force to be reckoned with, an amusing and powerful heroine, whether dealing with cannibalistic witches or mischievous sprites. Climb aboard, mateys!
