Thirteenth-century Bohemia is a dangerous place for a girl, especially one as odd as Mouse, born with unnatural senses and an uncanny intellect. Some call her a witch. Others call her an angel. Even Mouse doesn't know who -- or what -- she is. But she means to find out. When young King Ottakar shows up at the Abbey wounded by a traitor's arrow, Mouse breaks church law to save him and then agrees to accompany him back to Prague as his personal healer. Caught in the undertow of court politics at the castle, Ottakar and Mouse find themselves drawn to each other as they work to uncover the threat against him and to unravel the mystery of her past. But when Mouse's unusual gifts give rise to a violence and strength that surprise everyone, especially herself, she is forced to ask herself: Will she be prepared for the future that awaits her?

I liked the beginning and end of the book; the author made the unusual setting come alive, and Mouse, her foster family, and her love interest were characters I immediately rooted for. But the last few chapters of the book felt like an entirely different book, and by the time I got to the end I didn't care that her father was finally revealed (though I would have liked to have known more about her mother). This read as if it was set up for a sequel (and indeed, one was published two years later), but without any indication that one was going to be published, I felt like I was reading something unfinished.

Though this book was fairly well written (for an average book), there were too many predictable plot elements and a very dissapointing ending. The story kept me intrigued at first but by the end I was ready do skip and skim through it. I held out to the end hoping for some resurrection of interest but it fell flat. I read the excerpt for the sequel and it didn't hold my interest either. I have no desire to read more by this author. However, much of this could be my personal taste. Others could find this book compelling if they have more interest in Demons, Christian superstitions and stuff regarding Satan than I do. As I said, it wasn't poorly written.

I would give this a 4 star rating. It is a fabulous tale, very well researched and enchanting. The characters were very engaging and they take you on quite a journey. I did not see the ending coming but it was very fitting. A good yarn of a story with some whimsy to boot.
