Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. What follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.

Semi-autobiographic graphic novel about the author going through tooth trauma while she grows through normal growing adolescent pains. I’d seen this come through the library consistently since I started and finally took the time to read it and I’m glad I did. Telgemeier does a fantastic job weaving together her individual and specific problems with her teeth and the relatable problems of growing up and the politics of middle school and high school. Perfectly done! I don’t think I’ve read a book that so precisely encapsulated the feeling of middle school like Telemeier accomplished in this. Highly recommend for all kids and adults.

A delightful graphic novel based on the authors experience with tooth trauma and her long frustrating ordeal with getting her teeth fixed. This autobiographical novel was uplifting specially considering that Telgemeier was in her teens when she went through all these issues. I think she handled everything like a champ! I also love that true friendship shines at the end.

This book perfectly illustrates the cringe-worthy, anxiety-provoking middle school crush (among many other topics), although the main focus is on Raina's dental drama—she knocked out her two front teeth and had to endure years of dental work to regain her smile. The social food chain of middle and high school relies in large part on physical appearances; as I personally recall, this certain torture is embarrassing, demoralizing, and deeply unhealthy—even so, it will likely never go away. I hope this book will encourage young readers to rise above the drama and pain of growing up, and to realize that they are perfect just as they are.
