Started watching this mostly for a Jennifer Lawrence performance and she delivered again. Only part way through I realized it was a bio pic. As a retired business person, I found the movie interesting in its portrayal of the sleazy side of business, especially patents and the risks people take. At times it was a bit confusing, hence 3.5 stars. I'll blame the script.

10 minutes into this and I was bored. Did not like this movie.

A cautionary tale for naive inventors. A dizzying emotional roller coaster.
It's a dramedy, a difficult merging of drama and comedy (like mixing oil and water).
Generally successful here.

Very big lows and highs in this movie. At times I thought I couldn't watch it was so stressful and painful...and then unexpected triumph...ruination and then jubilation. Back and forth. You will become emotionally enraptured by this film. There are few films that attain this level of emotional involvement from the audience. The wicked half-sister and Cinderella relationship between Joy and her half-sister was realistically portrayed. Many people may recognize this ever-present threat of treachery from within one's own family in their own lives. It was an inspirational, touching movie, surprisingly about a woman who invents a mop and tries to make a business selling it. Usually movies are star-studded because the script is weak. This, however, was a very fine film.

I didn't quite get this movie. At first I thought maybe it was a comedy because of some of the scenes and situations. They were exaggerated and hard to believe so it seemed like comedy to me. But based on the film description it was intended as drama. I watched the whole thing unsure exactly what kind of movie it was. Too much of it was unbelievable and I couldn't imagine it really happening to anyone. So much was unexplained. Why and how could these things happen? I just didn't get it I guess.

Probably Jennifer Lawrence's best performance. Movie runs the gambit from hilarious to heartbreak. Very entertaining. It's worth a view.

The following review may contain some undesired content for people who have yet to see this film: It was a very stressful movie and you just wanted to go in there and sort everything out. It was sad that the family did not get back together again. Jennifer Lawrence does a great job in her role as Joy.

Enjoyed the film. Jennifer Lawrence does a great job as does Bradley Cooper. Not a fan of Robert De Niro tho.

Another boring film starring J. Lawrence and Bradley Cooper...they are just terrible and not convinceable in anything! Robert DeNiro can't even save this dull film. No 'joy' in this.

"You know what you are, Terry? You're like a gas leak. We don't see you. We don't smell you. But you're silently killing us all."

"You are in a room and there is a gun on the table. The only other person in the room is an adversary in commerce. Only one of you can prevail. Do you pick up the gun, Joy?"
