Germany 1958. In those years, "Auschwitz" was a word that some people had never heard of, and others wanted to forget as quickly as possible. Against the will of his immediate superior, young prosecutor Johann Radmann (Alexander Fehling) begins to examine the case of recently identified teacher who was a former Auschwitz guard. Radmann soon lands in a web of repression and denial, but also of idealization. He devotes himself with utmost commitment to his new task and is resolved to find out what really happened. He oversteps boundaries, falls out with friends, colleagues and allies, and is sucked deeper and deeper into a labyrinth of lies and guilt in his search for the truth. But what he ultimately brings to light will change the country forever.

This was a movie that I believe was underappreciated and deserved more press when it was released. I particular liked the character of the ambitious German prosecutor played by Alexander Fehling and how he came to discover the horrible truth, then struggled with it and tried blocking it out in very unhealthy ways-- heavy drinking, anyone-- then listened to his conscience and ended up doing the right thing even when doing the right thing was not at all easy. Finally, I love "JUSTICE" and this film has it. Well worth watching!!

Masterfully produced on the generation of Germans after World War II. Great acting from the entire cast in a gripping true story. You won't believe what went on in Germany after the war. To say the least, it is a real eye opener!

It's rather slow and plodding, but the subject is great. Who knew the next generation of Germans were kept in the dark ?
I recommend the DVD DENIAL 2017.

This is a 2014 German docudrama directed by Giulio Ricciarelli, based on true events.
It is quite amazing and shocking to know that, as of 1958, most Germans didn't know the name of Auschwitz, let alone crimes committed at the place.
At the trial the seventeen SS men were found guilty.
Throughout 20-month trial, however, none of them showed any remorse, which is also amazing and unbelievable.

Sometimes the only thing more disgraceful than the Nazi mass killings is the continuing denial to this day of this reality. Four paws up from Abby Tabby and Kristi

'it's not about the punishment - it's about the stories of the victims' and this trial allowed that to happen.

A saddening but truly inspiring film about efforts by some dedicated German prosecutors to expose the truth about, principally, Auschwitz in the late 1950s when young Germans knew little about it, and older ones were pretending that what took place there never happened. The extras are well worth watching too, esp. the Q and A with the writer/director Giuilio Ricciarelli and the star, Alexander Fehling.

Good script, weak execution, not strong enough performance.

One would never guess that this was a film produced in Germany, but full credit to the filmmakers for having the courage to make this film. Brilliantly acted, with a feel like a thrilling page turning book I recommend this film. It is not a complete "horrifying" film, but instead a legal thriller and for most I am sure an eye opener for many not well versed in this part of history.

Solid four star film. It was extremely important to the world AND Germany that what occurred at Auschwitz and other death camps were not swept under the proverbial rug, and that at least some of the perpetrators were tried and punished. Well made.
