A film project actor/author Ethan Hawke could never get off the ground is resurrected as a unique graphic novel. It depicts the merciless homeland security practiced by the Apache and the bad faith of the whites who refused to see their humanity. The black and white art is gorgeous but telling characters apart sometimes proved challenging.

A well written perspective from the Apache side of history. This book is so good that it should have it's own film adaptation.

Romantic and juvenile, not authentic. Cultural misappropriation. Dishonest self-promotional foreword, and bad afterword. Good illustrations, but poor dialogue and story telling.

A beautiful fictionalized story of the Apache Wars, meaningfully written and strikingly illustrated. Gorgeous.

The artwork in this graphic novel of the Apache wars is amazing (and the reason I gave it 3 stars); I particularly love the portraits at the beginning & end of the book. However, I found the story telling to be less inspired and occasionally confusing. While I do think this book is important in its telling of the Apache wars from more of an Apache perspective, I thought it lacked subtlety or complexity (perhaps because it was originally planned to be a movie). I wished for more from this beautiful book about such a sad & violent topic.

A wonderful look at the Apache wars from both sides of the conflict. Hawke's writing is wonderfully honest to either side of the conflict, washing away the often romanticized history of the west.
